C.I.T.Y Summer Leadership Camp

This is a leadership development camp targeted at teenagers in the society. The goal of the camp is to imbibe true leadership skills, positive values and lay a foundation of sustainable capacity building in the lives of teenagers. The camp is usually held for 10 days.

Every year, we hit new milestones; taking deliberate and bolder steps than our last.

  • Held the first summer leadership camp in partnership with Camp David.
  • Launched the meet-the-leader session with iconic leaders such as Ajoke Silva, The Igwe twins, Gemstone, Dayo Israel amongst others.
  • We received an award in February 2014 from the Lagos State Government and her Ministry of Education for the impact of the C.I.T.Y Program in her schools.
  • Introduced the C.I.T.Y Camp work-books and held the first multi-locational camp with venues in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun and Oyo States.
  • Expanded reach to Port Harcourt, thereby increasing to four camp locations in Nigeria.
  • Launched the #SponsoraChild campaign to enable reach to more teenagers through the Leadership Camp.
  • Reviewed the C.I.T.Y Camp Curriculum to reflect new research and thinking in its underlying themes.
  • Held C.I.T.Y Summer Leadership Camps in three locations, Lagos, Abuja and Ibadan.
  • Engaged over 100 teenagers across all locations (including those from an orphanage home in Abuja).
  • Introduced worksheets and lesson outlines to improve the learning experience of volunteers and leaders.

Impact transpires in those 10 days but it always seems like the time is never enough. Every camp season is filled with the excitement of learning and discovery new things. Despite the large number of teenagers reached, we ensure that the quality of the summer camp experience is not watered down. We maintain a ratio of 1 volunteer to 5 campers (1:5). This ratio ensures that every child is catered for and has an enriched experience.

The C.I.T.Y Summer Leadership Camp experience can be summarized into the following segments:

Training Presentations

This includes classroom trainings and general discussions on various leadership and personal development themed topics. The delivery of each training is based on our proven approach and methodology. We strive to ensure absolute participation from every participant while encouraging teamwork through our 21st century designed learning methods.
In the past 8 years, we have gotten feedback from participants which shows that the classroom activities were the most enjoyed activity of the summer program.

Team-based Projects/Activities

Participants are split into various squads during the camp. These smaller units serve as a basis for competitions and other camp activities. One of such competition is the Business Case Challenge; a practical problem-solving exercise where teenagers learn to approach problems with a creative mindset, collaborating within their teams to come up with solutions and effectively communicate these solutions to an audience. Another is the ‘Speak for Change’ contest, which teaches the participants to explore and gain insights on an assigned topic and work together in their teams to come up with an empowering speech on it.

Special Expository Programs

This includes our workshops, career fairs and special panel sessions with guest speakers. The workshops are based on participants’ areas of interest and range from bead making, photography, sign language, tie and dye, painting, public speaking amongst others. The goal is for the teenagers to be engaged in practical sessions to help build their talents or abilities in a craft of their choice. Our career symposiums feature professionals and organizations from various fields. They share their day-to-day experiences with the participants in other to help them in their career choices. We select thought leaders in various fields to share their journeys as professionals in their careers as well as lessons learned along the way.

Camp Bonding

This includes sports, team building activities, talent show, movie night and camp buddy time. Camp buddy time is a special time for the campers. It works with our 1:5 ratio and allows for one-to-one reach and that extra personal touch. It is also one of the most enjoyed activities by the campers.
